High School Lifter Holden McCoy Crushes Records at His First Meet

Holden McCoy's Epic Powerlifting Debut 💪

River City Barbell in Dayton, KY hosted their annual MAYhem powerlifting meet on Saturday, May 25. I drove down there early Saturday morning to help coach my high school athlete Holden McCoy during his first sanctioned powerlifting meet.

The Squat

The meet started off with Squat. My job is to help my athletes take the appropriate warm-ups, timing of the meet and most importantly helping manage the nerves of meet day.

Holden had been battling some low back pain a few months out from his competition, so we pulled back from back squatting for some time. Meet day approached and he gave it his all on back squat.

He went 3 for 3 and hit a personal record of 315 lbs on Back Squat @ 147 lbs bodyweight.

The Bench Press

Next was Bench Press. The bench press in sanctioned competitions can be a lot more challenging due to the THREE commands that must be done correctly to have 'good' lift.

Holden made his first and second attempt (205 lbs), but just misgrooved his final attempt at 225 lbs.

The Deadlift

Finally, Holden's best lift... the deadlift. Even if the deadlift is your best lift, it can still be very challenging because it is at the end of the competition and fatigue begins to set in.

Holden opened at 365 lbs and smoked it. We then jumped to 405 lbs for his second attempt and smoked that as well. It was a big jump, but I had Holden try 440 lbs on his final attempt for an all time personal record.

Unfortunately, it wasn't his day for 440, but soon!

He ended with a 925 total at 17 years old and 147 lbs bodyweight. He also broke three Kentucky state records (Squat, Deadlift & Total)!!
